Roll out the drums! The African Pharmaceutical Forum (APF) is 20 years old this year. We look forward to receiving you at the FIP congress in Cape Town (1-4 September 2024). It is fitting that we celebrate this special anniversary in Africa with a number of African initiatives. You don't want to miss any part of it! |
About us
The African Pharmaceutical Forum was founded in 2004, in Harare, Zimbabwe. Its inaugural meeting took place on 6 and 7 April 2004 with 15 countries in attendance (Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Lesotho, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe) along with FIP president Mr Jean Parrot and the World Health organization representative for Zimbabwe Dr Everist Njelesani. Our priority FIP Development Goals for 2024 are:
• DG 16 (Communicable diseases)
• DG 17 (Antimicrobial stewardship)
• DG 18 (Access to medicines, devices and services)
Other key priorities are:
- Producing a report (“Africa situation report”) providing an overview of pharmacy practices in the sub-Saharan region and addressing the critical healthcare areas aligned with the World Health Organization’s global health priorities. The collected insights will provide an update on the current landscape regarding workforce development and shortages, the role of pharmacy in managing and preventing both communicable and non-communicable diseases, pharmacies’ contributions to humanitarian efforts, and the implementation of sustainable pharmacy practices.
- Leading the transition of the FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN Centre for Excellence in Africa to an Africa-wide association of schools of pharmacy. This will be the first of its kind on the continent and bring together academic institutions to deliver on initiatives to transform education and facilitate the sharing of resources and best practices.
- Working with the FIPWiSE initative as well as FIP’s Early Pharmaceutical Career Group to identify gaps/needs/solutions for inequalities for women in science and education and for early career pharmacists across the region. There will be a survey to assess these, then follow-up actions will be set for the region.
