To mark World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week, FIP is among a number of global health organisations that have united in a joint statement to address the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The organisations include the International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO), the IAPO Patients for Patient Safety Observatory and its AMR Patient Alliance, the International Council of Nurses, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations, and the World Medical Association. The statement highlights the need for cross-sectoral cooperation to combat AMR and has been released in anticipation of the 2024 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR. As preparations for this meeting begin, the statement calls for actions spanning appropriate antimicrobial use and surveillance, supporting prevention measures, fostering innovation, ensuring access to new technologies and addressing the environmental impact of antibiotics. It aims to combat AMR by aligning with WHO guidelines, promoting global cooperation, urging inclusive clinical trials and promoting responsible manufacturing standards. AMR claimed approximately 1.3 million lives in 2019 and poses an annual risk of pushing 24 million people into extreme poverty by the next decade.
